01 About Us

Making it is the easy part. Knowing anyone wants it is not.

Bornabley is two words. Born, for what a small team already has, and ably, for what it takes to actually get it made. Almost nobody we meet is short of the first half.

An early manufacturer, a new food brand, a first product of any kind: the order is always the same. Finish the development, pay for the packaging design, meet the factory minimum, and only then go looking for the people who want it. Every bill arrives before the first answer does, and whatever does not sell sits in a warehouse with the money still inside it.

The usual order

Make it, then hope

The minimum run is ordered on a forecast. Selling starts after the money is already spent, and the first honest answer about demand arrives once there is a pallet to answer for.

Ours

Count it, then make it

A project opens before anything exists. People commit, the count becomes the production order, and the factory is given that number and no other. Demand is settled while it is still free to be wrong.

02 What we run

Three steps, and no inventory at the end.

We do not run taste tests or focus groups. The round is the test, and the only answer we trust is the one people paid for.

01

Open a project

BEFORE YOU SPEND ON IT

You do not need the finished article to start. Packaging design, final development, tooling, a first production run: every one of those takes money out before a single person has said yes. Open with what the product is, what it will cost and when it arrives, and let the demand arrive before the spending does.

Step one

02

Gather the demand

MONEY, NOT OPINIONS

People pre-order. A survey tells you what someone might do; a pre-order tells you what they did. If the number is reached the product is made, and if it is not, nothing is made and everyone is refunded. A round that stops is still a useful answer, and a far cheaper one than a warehouse.

Step two

03

Make exactly that

NO SURPLUS, NOTHING LEFT OVER

The count goes to the factory as the production order. Every unit made has a name on it before it exists, so there is no leftover stock to store, discount or write off — and the maker gets back what the round actually showed about price, size and volume.

Step three

WHAT A ROUND LEAVES BEHIND

Demand, written down.

Which version people chose, the price they paid, how many committed and how fast. Not a forecast to argue with. A record of what already happened, and the starting point for whatever gets made next.

03 How a round runs

Four steps, and one number decides.

01

Open

One product, one price, one delivery date, and the number of units that has to be reached. Published before the first order, so it cannot move afterwards.

02

Gather

People pre-order and the count runs in the open. Anyone can cancel for a full refund while the round is still running, so the number stays honest.

03

Decide

The round closes on its date. Reach the number and it becomes the production order. Miss it and nothing is made and every payment is returned in full.

  • 04

Make and ship. The factory is given the count, not a forecast. Every unit has a name on it before it exists, so none of it goes to storage.

  • ››

Whatever is not finished yet says so on the project page, in plain words. The price, the date and the number never move, and anyone can cancel for a full refund for as long as the round is open.

  • ››

The maker keeps what the round showed: the version people chose, the price they paid and the volume. Everything that leaves us is an aggregate, with nothing in it that identifies a buyer.

04 Roots

The unit we never made is the one that counts.

Mangroves standing on their prop roots in shallow water at sunrise.

Overproduction is the ordinary way a small company harms the place it works in. A minimum run ordered against a guess becomes stock, then a discount, then a skip. A round that misses its number is a factory run that never happened, a shipment that never sailed and a warehouse that never filled.

So this is not a programme bolted onto the side of the business. It is the same decision that protects the maker's money, read from the other end. Separately, and as a company, Bornabley commissions and funds mangrove planting for each round that goes ahead, and publishes the location, the count and the survival survey against that round.

We say only what we do. Joining a round is a pre-order of the units described on the project page. It is not a carbon offset, we do not describe anything here as carbon neutral, and we make no environmental claim on anyone's behalf.

05 Proof

We run it on ourselves first.

Our own food brand is our own first subject, under the same rules we would give anyone else. Nothing is made until the number is reached, and the number is on the page. You can watch it succeed or fail in public.

ROUND 01 · UNITED KINGDOM

Protein Fit Ube Yogurt Shake

A Korean lentil-protein shake, opened as a project before a single pouch existed. The spec, the pack size, the price and the number that has to be reached are all on the page, and none of it is manufactured until the round closes.

Every figure above is published before the round opens, not after it closes.

Built it already, and now it is sitting there?

Or better, you have not built it yet. We are running round 01 on our own brand first. Tell us what you make and who it is for, and we will come to you when round 02 opens.

06 FAQ

The ones that actually get asked.

Born and ably. What a small team is already able to make, and what it takes to actually get it made. Most of the people we meet are not short of the first half. They are short of a reason to commit money to a factory.

Early teams with something to make and no way to know whether it will sell. A first manufacturing run, a new food brand, a product line that has never existed. If the hard part is the minimum order quantity rather than the idea, this is built for you.

No, and that is rather the point. Packaging design, final development and the first production run all cost money before anyone has said yes, so we would rather you found out whether it sells before you pay for any of that. What is still unfinished is stated plainly on the project page, the price and the date do not move, and anyone can cancel for a full refund while the round is open.

No. We do not sit people down with samples and a questionnaire, because what someone says in a room is not what they do with their own money. The round is the test. People either pre-order or they do not, and that is the finding.

No. A round is a pre-order of physical goods. You are buying the product, not a stake in anything, and there is no return beyond the product itself. While a round is open you can cancel for a full refund; once it closes the count becomes the production order.

Nothing is manufactured and every payment is returned in full. That outcome is not a failure of the system, it is the system working. A round that stops costs a few weeks. A first production run that stops costs the company.

The units, made to the exact count, with no surplus to store. And the record of the round: which version people chose, the price they paid, how many committed and how quickly. Everything that leaves us is an aggregate, with no names or contact details in it.

No, and we do not describe anything here as carbon neutral or climate compensated. What we do is narrower and easier to check: we do not make things nobody ordered. Separately, and as a company, Bornabley funds mangrove planting and reports where it went and how much of it survived.

Not yet. We are running round 01 on our own brand first, because taking someone else's production budget into an untested system would be the exact mistake we built this to avoid. Tell us what you make and who it is for, and we will come back to you when round 02 opens.
